RALEIGH — THE Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic was, as usual, a big even in the Triangle this year. It also raises funds that are put to good use in the community.
Friday, a check for $750,000, money raised by the sporting event, was presented to the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The Golf Classic took place in August on the links at Cary's Prestonwood Country Club. Celebrities, including actor Kevin Costner and members of the band Hootie and the Blowfish, packed the course to raise money in the name of the late North Carolina State Wolfpack basketball coach, Jim Valvano.
The Classic has raised more than $1.5 million for cancer research in its three year history.
