Duke Won't Get Caught Unprepared Again

Posted December 5, 1996

— If there is ever another storm like Hurricane Fran, you can bet Duke University will be closed.

Duke has revamped its severe weather policy following sharp criticism in the wake of Fran. Despite snapped power lines and toppled trees on the day after the storm hit, Duke officials kept the school open.

One campus employee drove into a downed tree and later died.

The new policy will allow more employees to stay home in severe weather.
