Festive Decorations Can Attract Burglars

RALEIGH — Holiday decorations help to spread the spirit of the season, but they can also pose a danger by attracting burglars.
Police say during the holiday season, criminals look for houses they think are filled with gifts, and for ways to break in.
Common sense, police say, tells you to keep doors and windows locked and keep gifts out of plain view through windows, but there's more you can do.
For instance, don't pile up empty boxes at the curb depicting expensive gifts you have inside the house, and get to know your neighbors. If they know what cars belong in your driveway and who should or should not be entering your home, it can prevent a lot of loss.
Most police departments will inspect your house if you have questions about its safety.
