Durham Records 42nd Murder

DURHAM — About 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon a man was shot repeatedly in the backyard of a duplex at 103 W. Umstead St. Declared dead at the scene, he was Durham's 42nd murder victim of 1996.
Police identified the man as Cedric Lamont Alston, 19. No arrests had been made by late Saturday night.
Alston was awaiting trial on charges stemming from a June 15 home invasion in northern Durham, when five men armed with pump shotguns allegedly barged in and beat and sexually assaulted six residents.
