Weather Great for 10K Run

RALEIGH — The 2,000 runners expected for today's 13thannual 10K Old Reliable Run are smiling. The weather is ideal for the 6.2mile course -- a high of 58 and light northeast winds.

Downtown streets will be closed from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thewheelchair race starts at 1:50 and two minutes later the baby joggersegment gets rolling, for joggers who push high-performance baby buggies.

All registration had to be completed Saturday; there is no Sundayregistration.

Course record for runners is 28:07 in the men's division, and 31:34 inthe women's division.

More good news: parking will be plentiful, many lots will be open forfree -- and there's no need to feed the parking meters.

Start and finish of the race will be in the 200 block of South MdDowellStreet, near the News & Observer newspaper offices.

The race extends west as far as the N.C. State University Bell Tower,and north past the Executive Mansion up to Chestnut Street.

Competitors are expected to be on the course for about an hour.

The Old Reliable Run was ranked among the top 50 in the nation lastyear, and is the second-largest road race in the state.

The wheelchair event is among the biggest on the East Coast, and thebaby jogger division, with about 30 entries, is one of the largest in thecountry.
