Police Identify Body Found in Durham

DURHAM — Police have identified a body found Sundayin Durham as that of a 42-year-old local man, and an autopsy shows that hesuffered a gunshot wound.

The man was identified as Larry Darnell Jones, who had lived in Durham,moved away and recently returned. He was identified through dentalrecords.

Jones' body was found Sunday in a sewage drainage ditch along UmsteadStreet. Police also found a small-caliber gun.

Extensive deterioration of the bodyindicates death might have occurred four to eight weeks ago. His body could have been swept intothe city sewer system from as far away as Interstate 40 or Angier Avenue.

Police have interviewed nearby residents, butnone reported seeing or hearing anything amiss. No one knows how long the body mighthave been in the culvert.
