Live Grenade Disabled

FATETTEVILLE — A motorist flagged down a CumberlandCounty deputy early Sunday, reporting that an armed man was at aGillespie Street motel. Their investigation turned up a live grenade.

A two-member military ordnance team took the weapon to Fort Bragg so itcould be destroyed.

On arriving at the Mt. Rose Motel, deputies searched a 44-year-oldman. No weapon was found. But as officers spotted the grenadeoutside the building, the man bolted.

He was caught in woods beside McInnis Street. The Cumberland CountySheriff's office said charges are pending.
