Live Grenade Disabled

A motorist flagged down a Cumberland County deputy early Sunday, reporting that an armed man was at a Gillespie Street motel. Their investigation turned up a live grenade.

A two-member military ordnance team took the weapon to Fort Bragg so it could be destroyed.

On arriving at the Mt. Rose Motel, deputies searched a 44-year-old man. No weapon was found. But as officers spotted the grenade outside the building, the man bolted.

He was caught in woods beside McInnis Street. The Cumberland County Sheriff's office said charges are pending.
