Man Charged in 3 Rapes from 1989

FAYETTEVILLE — Charles G. Willenbring, who turned himself in to police Friday, has been charged with two counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree burglary, and three counts of first degree sex offense. The Cumberland County sheriff's office will also be charging Willenbring, according to a news release, and the investigation continues.
The crimes allegedly date to 1989. According to records, Willenbring, 33, confessed to the crimes.
Magistrate's records indicate that Willenbring may also face a kidnapping charge, and that he is a suspect in three rapes in Virginia.
Willenbring, who lives at 3005 Rouse Drive, turned himself in about 6:30 p.m. His first court appearance will be Nov. 4 at 9 a.m. in district court.
The break-ins occurred while the women were asleep. One victim told police that she was staying at the apartment of a friend who was away for the weekend, when she was raped in a Ramsey Street apartment on April 10, 1989. She said she awakened to find a man in the room. She said he made her go to another room, where he raped her.
Two other rape victims lived in apartments on Tradewinds Drive. One woman reported that a man broke into her home on June 3, 1989, hit her on the head, choked her and then raped her. Another woman said a man entered her apartment by way of a broken window on July 23, 1989 and forced her to have sex at knifepoint.
Willenbring was jailed, with bail seto at $125,000.
