CHAPEL HILL — A Chapel Hill school bus driver was arrested Friday and charged with driving while impaired.
Some employees at Ephesus Elementary School, including the principal, said they smelled alcohol on 50-year-old Cecil Ingram before he left with a group of students Friday morning, but that the director of transportation said to let him proceed. Principal Terrance Young let the driver go, but called 9-1-1 because he was concerned.
Transportation Director Mary Truelove said Young followed proper procedure by allowing the driver to go to his next stop and let law enforcement officers intervene there.
Some parents and others who live near the school strongly with that procedure.
Two hours after he stopped driving, his blood-alcohol level allegedly measured .03, just one-tenth of a point below the legal limit for commercial drivers.
