Posted October 17, 1996
FAYETTEVILLE — An accident involving three vehicles resulted from drag-racing on Bragg Blvd. in Fayetteville Wednesday night. Five people were injured, two of them seriously.
Involved in the wreck were a 1974 Ford pickup truck driven by William Thrower of York, South Carolina. He carried a passenger, Roy Williams, also of York. A 1995 Ford driven by Sammy Jean Dewett, 17, and carrying a passenger, Jason Locklear, both from Fayetteville, was also involved. The third vehicle was a tractor-trailer driven by Walter Colwell of Newport News, Virginia.
Police say their diagrams indicate the Thrower's truck attempted to pass Colwell's trailer and struck the left rear of the trailer. Dewett's car then apparently hit Thrower's truck.
DWI and a failure to reduce speed charges were issued, but a preliminary report does not indicate who was charged.
Thrower and Williams are seriously injured. both are being treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
