Bragg Blvd. Drag Race Ends in Accident

FAYETTEVILLE — An accident involving three vehiclesresulted from drag-racing on Bragg Blvd. in Fayetteville Wednesday night.Five people were injured, two of them seriously.

Involved in the wreck were a 1974 Ford pickup truck driven by WilliamThrower of York, South Carolina. He carried a passenger, Roy Williams,also of York. A 1995 Ford driven by Sammy Jean Dewett, 17, and carrying apassenger, Jason Locklear, both from Fayetteville, was also involved. Thethird vehicle was a tractor-trailer driven by Walter Colwell of NewportNews, Virginia.

Police say their diagrams indicate the Thrower's truck attempted topass Colwell's trailer and struck the left rear of the trailer. Dewett'scar then apparently hit Thrower's truck.

DWI and a failure to reduce speed charges were issued, but apreliminary report does not indicate who was charged.

Thrower and Williams are seriously injured. both are being treated atCape Fear Valley Medical Center.
