Three Children Die in Fire
Posted October 12, 1996
RALEIGH — National Fire Prevention Week had a very sad ending for a Raleigh family early Saturday morning. Three children died in a house fire.
A house on Garner Road was fully engulfed in flames as fire crews arrived just after midnight. The fire began in a downstairs bedroom. There is no word on what started the blaze.
Two children were taken by medical helicopter to UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill; the other was taken to Wake Medical Center. The children -- aged 3, 4 and 11 -- died shortly after their arrivals at the facilities.
Three other children in the house -- aged 15, 10 and 19 months -- managed to escape unharmed. According to fire officials, no adult was in the house when the fire broke out.
Officals say no smoke detectors were found in the woodframe house.
Names of victims and survivors have not been released.
