Driver Charged in Fatal Crash

HILLSBOROUGH — A Mebane truck driver has been chargedin a Friday afternoon traffic accident that killed an Appalachian StateUniversity student.

The Highway Patrol charged Howard F. Blough, 29, of Apt A, 707 N.Summit Ridge Rd, with death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed.

The accident occurred at the merge of I-85 and I-40, about 3:30 p.m.Friday.

Blough, driving a flat bed truck west on I-40, came on a trafficslowdown. He swerved into the median to avoid hitting the cars in frontof him, according to the patrol.

But he crossed the median running 65 mph when he slammed head on intoan eastbound car driven by Kristie Lynn Curran, 19. The impact sent hercar rolling over several times, and it also struck another car, slightlyinjuring a Garner couple.

Curran was returning to her Cary home for the weekend. She and herfamily had moved to Cary in 1993 from New Fairfield, CN. She was agraduate of Cardinal Gibbons High School. She is survived by her parents,brother and grandparents.

Investigators said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
