— Fire hit a former Days Inn motel in Durham for the third time since January 2006, and officials are treating it as suspicious.

Durham firefighters responded to calls about a fire at the abandoned motel around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Around a dozen trucks from different stations were at the Duke Inn on Redwood Road. Both the first and second floors of the 119-room motel were on fire.

Firefighters said they had difficulty putting out the fire, because there was no hydrant close by. Crews drove to the hydrant on Red Mill, 2 miles away, to refill their trucks.

The State Highway Patrol closed the Red Mill Exit 182 off Interstate 85 to ease access to the hydrant for fire crews.

Fires also hit the Duke Inn in April and January of 2006, Durham police said.

I think the fire this morning was left over from yesterday. There was a fire truck there probably keeping an eye out just in case it got out of hand again. But I would have to say that it is burnt to the ground this time. We stopped to check it out and that thing was BLAZIN!!!!
KUDOS To all the Firefighters from serveral surrounding areas..... First and foremost Redwood Fire Dept..... City of Durham, Durham County, Creedmoor, Bethesda, Parkwood, Bahama, Lebanaon, Orange Rural, and of cousre the BIG DOB from Moriah....Great Job and Teamwork Guys and Gals!

They should just completely burn it down. It's ridiculous. The fire department will probably do it for free. Sometimes they do it as training excerises and they owner would just need to have the debri removed. I'm sure the fire dept is tried of going out there and would be glad to do it.

"What idiotic council or board of commissioners would even allow the construction of a motel two miles from the nearest hydrant?" -- Steve Crisp

This hotel was built long before durham expanded it's municipal water system to that part of the county. How many rural areas have hydrant service anyhow? BTW, it was on fire again this morning... if the dummy arsonist doesn't stop he's going to start a forest fire (being in a farily heavily wooded part of the county), and however wrong, I hope their home is nearby. On the downside so is mine... grr... Atleast there is a hydrant right out front ;-)

Here's a thought: Let it burn down to the ground. No more fires..No more problems..

Why put out a vacant motel that had already had several suspicious fires. Sounds like everyone familar with the area knew it was bad real estate. Controlled burn - controlled problem.

Did this building burn to the ground this time? If not, then why didn't the fire departments let them burn to the ground? As for the water situation...Falls lake is right down the road. Why didn't they truck the water in? I have driven past this place a few times. Looked scarey to me.
