DURHAM, N.C. — Fire hit a former Days Inn motel in Durham for the third time since January 2006, and officials are treating it as suspicious.

Durham firefighters responded to calls about a fire at the abandoned motel around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Around a dozen trucks from different stations were at the Duke Inn on Redwood Road. Both the first and second floors of the 119-room motel were on fire.

Firefighters said they had difficulty putting out the fire, because there was no hydrant close by. Crews drove to the hydrant on Red Mill, 2 miles away, to refill their trucks.

The State Highway Patrol closed the Red Mill Exit 182 off Interstate 85 to ease access to the hydrant for fire crews.

Fires also hit the Duke Inn in April and January of 2006, Durham police said.
