Beaten Cumberland County Toddler Remains in Coma

FAYETTEVILLE — An 18-month-old Cumberland County boy remains in a coma Friday after being admitted to Duke University Medical Center with massive head and torso injuries.

The child's mother and her boyfriend are behind bars under $25,000 bond, charged with child abuse.

Cumberland County Sheriff "Moose" Butler says Tamara Melvin and Steven Franklin are responsible for the child's injuries.

The sheriff's department was notified of the incident Wednesday.
