RDU INTERNATIONAL — Everyone who travels by plane will soon have to pass by members of the National Guard to get to their plane. Starting Friday, soldiers will keep watch at various security checkpoints at RDU International and other commerical airports in North Carolina.
The North Carolina National Guard is calling it Operation Noble Hawk. It is sending 112 guardsmen to Fort Bragg. The FAA will spend two days training them in airport security.
Members of the National Guard are preparing for a six-month assignment at North Carolina's airports. The mission could cost about $2 million, but the federal government is footing the bill.
The government is also working on its own airport security plan, which may or may not include the National Guard over the long term.
