DOT Worker In Critical Condition After I-40 Wreck

Roscoe Narron, 64, was in a DOT assistance vehicle behind a troopers' car along I-40 Tuesday when officials say an SUV slammed into the back of Narron's vehicle. He suffered serious head injuries and is being treated at WakeMed.

Officials say the incident occurred around 11:45 a.m., when two state troopers were gathering evidence from a prior accident between Harrison Avenue and Aviation Parkway on Interstate 40 westbound.

Both troopers' cruisers had their blue lights on, according to officials. The first cruiser was entirely off the highway in the emergency apron (nearest the eastbound lanes of travel), while the second cruiser was slightly parked in theinnermost lane of travel to create a "safety zone."

Officials say an Incident Management Assistance Patrol (I-MAP) truck with two people inside then pulled up behind the second car and put its flashing arrow on to direct drivers away from thearea. Narron was in this vehicle.

A Ford Excursion driven by John Keku, 40, of Chapel Hill plowed intothe back of the I-MAP truck pushing it into the back of the second patrol car, according to officials.

Earlier this year, Narron was recognized as a good Samaritan for his work along North Carolina roads.
