A Johnston County School has its own relief effort underway. Students are selling spirit strips for 10 cents each.
"It's helping all those victims from the bombing and we just need to raise money and help them out," says student Ashley Gandolph.
"We care. Even though we're young, we still care about what happened and it meant a lot to us and we care about our country," says student Emily Burgess.
The students are making chains with their ribbons and the goal is to completely circle the football field. They picked up one-third of their goal in one hour.
"I don't think it will be that hard. We have a lot of dedicated students here," Ashley says.
"It will always be a scar on our heart. It will never go away. It will heal, but it won't go completely go away," says student Caroline Jerger.
Smithfield Middle School has issued a challenge to North Carolina schools and schools nationwide. They want them to duplicate their project and to send the proceeds to the American Red Cross.
