Johnston County Accident Leaves One Dead, Two Hospitalized

Posted September 10, 2001

— A deadly collision on a stretch of State Road 1010, four miles west of Smithfield, left one dead and two seriously injured.

A 1982 Datsun heading north on Swift Creek ran a stop sign and was broadsided by a 1996 Pontiac, according to state troopers.

The impact sliced the Datsun in half, and everyone was thrown out.

Some onlookers believe the intersection needs a stop light.

"I come through here maybe 10 times a week, and I'm even scared to come through here," Billy Shallington said.

The driver of the Datsun died en route to the hospital, according to the Highway Patrol. His name has not been released.

The other two occupants are being treated at area hospitals. Their names have also not been released.

The people in the Pontiac, a woman and an 11-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries.
