Cumberland County Considers Changes To School Field Trip Policy

Posted September 6, 2001

— A new proposal could put restrictions on school fields trips for students in Cumberland County.

The plan comes in light of the April accident involving Massey Hill Classical High School students. Several of them were hurt in a charter bus accident in Georgia. The students were headed to a band competition in Orlando, Fla.

Among the proposed changes:

  • Charter bus trips would have to comply with new state guidelines, including background checks on drivers.
  • Field trips will have to be curriculum-based.
  • Overnight trips outside a 150-mile radius would have to be approved by the principal.
  • The

    school board

will review the plan at its next meeting.
