— A Raleigh high school teacher was arrested in Greensboro on Friday for allegedly trying to solicit a child.

Scott Libert Hovey, a high school teacher with the Wake County Public School System, was arrested after detectives identified him in an undercover Internet chat room investigation.

He was attempting to solicit a child, according to Greensboro police.

Hovey, 26, was charged with Internet solicitation of a child for sexual activity, police said. He was arrested near the Four Seasons Town Center and placed in the Guilford County Jail under $25,000 bond.

The WCPSS suspended Hovey with pay, pending determination of his legal status, officials said.

Hovey has been employed by the WCPSS since August 2004 and has taught at Millbrook High School and Southeast Raleigh High School.

The investigation is continuing. Greensboro police asked that anyone with information related to their investigation contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 336-373-2255 or Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.

DAMOFO: I will try to increase my skills as well as to advise you to recognize a bit of sarcasm when you see it. I understand what your saying but even if it is a low percentage of the over all epidemic of child sexual abuse it is still an enourmous problem.

KC, learn to understand what you read. I wrote that teacher abuse was a small part of THE OVERALL problem.

And to the former student, his being a nice guy is no reason to go easy on him. If he is guilty of soliciting a underage female, he should go to jail, nice guy or not.

okay so Mr. Hovey was my math teacher when i was a junior in high school..and he really actully is a real nice guy..i would have never thought that he would ever do anything like this..but go easy on him..he is real nice and means good..well at least he used too.

The man is a sicko...simple and plain.

DAMOFO: OK! You Win! Your right, Thousands of our educators abusing our kids is a small problem. What was I thinking, sorry if I over reacted...UGH !!!!!

  • daMoFo Jul 16, 2007

Nobody said that one student was acceptable. The source you site gave their best "estimate". And it is based on what? The numbers I gave were based on convicted predators not estimates. And if a sexual comment" is sexual abuse, then every person on the face of the earth has been abused.
I'm not diminishing the seriousness of the incident with this teacher. My point is that teachers are not running amok preying on kids and that teachers going after kids is a small part of the sexual abuse problem.

For those who insist on statistics heres one. As far as I'm concerned, one kid abused by anyone is one to many!!!!

"The best estimate is that 15% of students will be sexually abused by a member of the school staff during their school career." (Shakeshaft, Ph.D., Hofstra University: Testimony, NYS Senate Commitee On Children & Families, 2/12/98)

Charol Shakeshaft, professor of educational administration at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., concluded that the mistreatment of those millions of students ranged from sexual comments to rape

KCF - you are right, of course. Rise above the nonsense and bizarre statistical "reasoning."

  • daMoFo Jul 15, 2007

KCF, the point of the post was to point out that predatory teachers are a very small percent of the problem and that kids have much more to fear from predatory family members than predatory teachers. But I suspect you actually understood that. I provided documentation to back that up. Can you provide documentation of "thousands" of teachers molesting kids? I won't hold my breath.
