Severe Weather Leaves Mark Across Triangle Area

A series of fires kept firefighters busy across the area. One damaged a home in Cary. The family living there said they heard a loud pop and later discovered that the attic was on fire. There are no injuries reported in that fire.

Another fire damaged a Fuquay-Varina business. Fire crews said the inside of Signs Unlimited, located on Broad Street, suffered significant damage. Both fires are believed to have been weather-related.

at about 8:55 p.m. Numerous trees were reported to be down south of Holly Springs, and hail ranging from .25 inches to about .75 inches in diameter was reported five miles south-southwest of Holly Springs.

Heavy rain was also reported throughout the area, with at least two inches falling within an hour near U.S. 15-501 in Pittsboro.

In Garner, weather spotters reported some flooding at U.S. 401 and Simkins Road, and strong wind gusts up to 65 mph were reported about six miles south of Garner.

Investigators believe lightning may have been the cause of a house fire at 101 S. Coslett Court in Cary, but the exact cause was still under investigation late Sunday evening.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported four wrecks, but no serious injuries, on Interstate 85 that were believed to be a result of the heavy rain in that area.

As of Monday morning, Progress Energy reports 316 customers in Fuquay-Varina are still in the dark. Thirty outages are scattered throughout the Triangle. Duke Energy reports 16,000 outages, most of which are in the Charlotte area.

Severe weather also moved into the Triangle area early Sunday morning knocking out power to about 3,200 customers. There were no reports of any major damage, but authorities believe lightning did strike a tree that fell onto Interstate 85 in Orange County. A motorcyclist later died after crashing into it, authorities said.
