Blue Cross Extends Generic Drug Co-Payment Waiver

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina's largest healthcare insurer is extending a program that waives the co-payment for generic drugs through the end of 2006.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina's 2006 co-payment waiver program, which began Feb. 1, was initially scheduled to end on July 31.

Blue Cross Blue Shield officials said that claims data show between February and April 2006, members saved around $20 million on out-of-pocket prescription expenses, while the insurer's generic dispensing rate rose to 56 percent of all prescriptions.

According to officials, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina serves more than 3.3 million members.
