The device was located on Cameron Street at Davie Hall. UNC Physical Plant employees found a five-inch pipe with caps on both ends in the road 11 a.m. Monday. They later called the UNC Public Safety department and the fire department.
Police roped off an area 100 yards away from the device in every direction.
The bomb squad went to the scene and used a bomb-testing robot to detonate the suspected pipe bomb. Two buildings had to be evacuated. Some students considered the commotion as an inconvenience.
"It was just a disruption to classes. I mean people could not get in and out of buildings," said one student.
Cameron Avenue was blocked off, leading to traffic backups around the campus. Authorities say there was not a note with the device. They also will not say what type of material was contained in the explosive device.
