RALEIGH, N.C. — A Minnesota man was arrested on Sunday after he left his dog in his sport utility vehicle while he shopped at Raleigh's Crabtree Valley Mall, authorities said.

Arvin Mangasi Vocal, 33, was charged with misdemeanor animal abuse after he allegedly exposed his pit bull-mix to direct sunlight for about two hours. Temperatures reached about 87 degrees Sunday afternoon.

Crabtree Valley Special Police were able to rescue the dog after a group of shoppers alerted authorities. A spokeswoman for Crabtree Valley Mall said the dog is recovering at the Wake County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
