<b>SUNSET BEACH, N.C.</b> — The Memorial Day weekend got off to a bad start for some vacationers on Sunset Beach.

The bridge on N.C. Highway 79 connecting the beach to the mainland was closed for about five hours on Saturday because a cable the moves and supports the bridge broke Saturday morning.

People were not able to get on or off the island until work crews repaired the problem.

The bridge reopened to vehicle and boat traffic at about 8 p.m., officials said.
