Pedestrian Struck By Unidentified Vehicle In Garner

GARNER, N.C. — Garner police are investigating a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian that happened early Sunday morning near U.S. Highway 70.

According to police reports, Jerry Michael Smith, 46, is believed to have been walking eastbound on U.S. 70 near the Vandora Springs Road exit at about 4 a.m. when an unidentified vehicle apparently struck him. He was taken to WakeMed where he was listed in critical condition on Sunday afternoon.

A passing motorist discovered the Smith shortly after 4 a.m. and contacted police.

Rescue crews arrived at the scene and immediately transported the victim to WakeMed. He was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Police are asking for public assistance in finding the unknown vehicle and driver. Authorities believe the vehicle was probably a white 1990s model General Motors car. The damage may be concentrated on the left front of the vehicle and toward the top of the windshield.

The driver may try to conceal his or her vehicle in a garage or under a tarp or cover, police said.

Police are offering up to a $1,000 reward for information that helps solve the case.
