Voters Weigh In On Helms Announcement

Since the 1970s, Helms has made headlines as a U.S. senator, by speaking his mind. Never shying away from controversy, he has developed a loyal following and fueled a staunch opposition.

"Whether you agree with him or not, he stands for what he believes in and regardless of what it might do to his career. He's done that for years," says voter Olinda Camden.

"He votes against everything that would help the blacks or help some poor whites. He's just down everything," says voter Ella Sanders.

"I hope he runs again because I really like him. I really do. I think he's one fine young man," says voter Doug Sutton.

Some say the 79-year-old Helms is too old to serve another six-year term in the Senate.

"Like a lot of old senators and congressman that's up in age, they're not up with the modern stuff. They still got their minds from the way they were raised up," says voter Sammie Morgan.

"I think he's a great man. You know, I got respect for him. I just hope he retires you know. He's at the age, you know, he needs a little rest." says voter Joseph Canady.
