FAYETTEVILLE — Some very important people were recognized Monday for service to their country.
The Senior Center in Fayetteville held a BBQ to honor former soldiers who received the prestigious Purple Heart. Members of Tarheel Chapter #586, the local Purple Heart chapter, had lunch and talked about their years in service.
"It's pretty proud, you know, when somebody greets you and says, 'Oh, you're the Purple Heart.' The Purple Heart is one of the elite medals you get," says recipient Charlie Williams.
The Purple Heart is given to soldiers who are wounded in war.
