New Middle School Opens In Chapel Hill

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — It is the first day of school for some students in the Triangle area, but the nerves and back-to-school jitters are being replaced by excitement at one school in Chapel Hill. A brand-new middle school opened its doors to students Monday morning.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro middle school students and teachers have crowded into their facilities for the past two years. The opening of Smith gives everyone some breathing room.

By 8 a.m. Monday, the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders were trying hard to look cool, but inside many of them were pretty excited to begin classes at Smith Middle School.

"I'm excited. I just moved here, so I'm looking foward to making new friends. I'm looking forward to having an exciting day," says student Amit Rao.

The students arrived on time, but the building itself is a little behind schedule. One classroom wing and the auditorium will take at least another month before the school can use them, but no one seemed to mind on Monday.

"A lot of my friends are here -- a whole lot of them from my old school, so I'm expecting a lot of fun," says student Haley Fallin.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro wants to build two new elementary schools - but that will depend on if voters approve a county construction bond in November.
