RALEIGH, N.C. — Two Fayetteville teenagers could be extradited this week to Oklahoma to face charges in connection with the shooting death of a Texas man last month.
Timothy Byford and Sean Leggett were arrested Sunday in connection with the death of Rufus Thomas Lowery, of Grand Prairie, Texas. Oklahoma authorities said Lowery had been shot in the head; his body was found at an interstate rest stop near Thackerville, Okla.
Love County, Okla., authorities said they later found a burning sport utility vehicle that had been stolen by the two men from North Carolina burning about a mile north of the rest stop.
The suspects must sign extradition papers to return to Oklahoma. If they refuse, investigators must get a governor's warrant before they are returned to the state.
Investigators tracked the two teens back to North Carolina, where they found Byford in Fayetteville and Leggett in Winston-Salem. Authorities said they had been hiding out in several states before returning to North Carolina.
