According to the state Highway Patrol, the accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Monday on Rosser Pittman Road.
Investigators said the driver of a pickup truck lost control of the vehicle and that it ran off the side of the road into a wooded area.
The driver of the truck, Gabriel Quezada, 59, was listed in critical condition at UNC Hospitals Monday afternoon. Aaron Fuentes, who was a passenger in the truck, was taken to Central Carolina Hospital with two broken legs. Another passenger, Jonathan Fuentes, 16, died at the scene.
Troopers said speed was a factor in the accident. Traffic had to be briefly detoured in the area as crews worked to clear the scene.
