CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Officials at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are warning students and staff to take extra safety precautions after a report of an attempted sexual assault near a UNC dorm early Friday morning.

According to authorities, the alleged victim was about to enter Avery Residence Hall around 3 a.m. when she was approached and grabbed by an unknown male. The victim managed to break loose from the man, who then fled on foot northbound on Ridge Road.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a light to medium complexion. He was last seen wearing a light-colored long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and athletic shoes. Police say that the man appeared to be unarmed.

Authorities said increased patrols had already been put in place on campus; a standard procedure at the end of academic semesters. They also advise anyone on campus to stay alert when traveling at night, stay in well-lit areas, and immediately report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
