UNC Kicks Off Football Practice Saturday

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — In less than three weeks, North Carolina opens the college football season against the defending national champion Oklahoma. Saturday, new coach John Bunting greeted the Tar Heel players for their first full practice.

Forcing turnovers will get added emphasis from defensive coordinator John Tenuta. Defensive backs dropping balls in a new drill get ten pushups.

The Tar Heel linebackers are working on shedding blockers and tackling the football. NOrth Carolina led the ACC in sacks, but finished last in turnovers forced.

"I think especially up front, causing fumbles by the fullback, maybe pressuring the quarterback to make a bad pass, or get an interception and getting downfield is an emphasis. That was a big problem last year. We only had two interceptions going into the last game. Maybe not that many," said defensive tackle Will Chapman.

Practice at North Carolina State, Duke and ECU gets under way this week as well.
