Clifford Hansford, 44, was arrested about 7:30 Sunday morning.
Hansford is accused of robbing four banks in the area. The latest was a Wachovia bank in Raleigh yesterday.
Authorities received a tip he was staying at the Inn Keeper Hotel on South Saunders Street. Police had to use tear gas to get Hansford out of the room.
"The suspect refused to come out. He had a second person in there with him, and actually threatened that person bodily harm," said Capt.D.A. Inman of the Raleigh police.
No one was hurt in the incident. Hansford got his name because he uses a taxi to get to the bank
and
to make his get-away. Hansford faces five bank robbery charges and an additional charge of kidnapping.
Hansford's bond has been set at $1 million. His first court appearance is set for Monday.
