DURHAM, N.C. — Police are treating the discovery of a body underneath a Durham bridge on Tuesday as a suspicious death.

State workers found the remains, which were badly decomposed, at about 2 p.m. under the the Vickers Avenue bridge near Chapel Hill Road.

Police were not able to identify the body or determine a cause of death. They were unsure how long it had been under the bridge.

Traffic was shut down to one lane on the Durham Freeway in each direction Tuesday afternoon between the downtown exit and Chapel Hill Road while police were at the scene.
