HARNETT COUNTY — A man's best friend turns out to be his worst enemy in Harnett County.
James Brown, 71, still chokes up whenever he talks about Lucky, his six-year-old Samoan. But early Monday morning, Brown was not so lucky.
The dog he had raised from six weeks old suddenly attacked him. Brown fought the dog for about 15 minutes before it finally backed down.
"He was one of the sweetest dogs you've ever seen," he says.
When Erwin Animal Control arrived, they sedated the dog before taking him to the local shelter. But early Tuesday morning, Lucky died.
Brown says he was told his dog died of a heart attack. Lab results were unable to determine if the dog was rabid or not. Brown had to have 75 stitches in his legs and hand.
