Police Chief Candidates Face Forum Questions

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — After a long day of interviews with city leaders, the two men and two women trying to become Raleigh's next police chief answered a series of questions at a public forum Monday night.

Major John Knox, the city's interim chief, has spent his career with the Raleigh Police Department.

Jane Perlov, the public safety secretary of Massachusetts, is a veteran of the New York City Police Department.

Scott Cunningham is a major with the Tampa, Fla. Police Department.

Sonya Proctor serves as Maryland's deputy director of Crime Control and Public Safety.

Russell Allen, Raleigh's city manager, says he wants to hear from the people the new chief will be sworn to protect.

"I think we need someone with strong leadership skills, someone who 's willing to reach out to all corners of the community and is even-handed and fair in the way they interpret the law and enforce the law," he says.

The candidates finish their grueling interview schedule with police officers on Tuesday.
