PITTSBORO — The commute between the Triangle and Asheboro is about to get smoother. Pittsboro's Highway 64 bypass is scheduled to open Monday.

The new road will also speed up the trip from Jordan Lake to points down east.

and thousands of drivers are ready for the Highway 64 Bypass around Pittsboro.

For years, drivers passing through Chatham County have suffered through the infamous bottleneck at Pittsboro's courthouse traffic circle.

The eight-mile, $11 million bypass is designed to keep drivers moving.

"I'm glad it's coming in," says driver Charley Peele. "There's so much traffic coming through Pittsboro now that we can't hardly get through town. On the weekend it's just bumper to bumper. Pull into the grocery store down here and you can't hardly get out. I'm glad to see the bypass coming."

While many people are happy about the bypass, others say less traffic means less business.

As many as 15,000 vehicles pass through Pittsboro each day. The new bypass will keep 8,000 vehicles out of town.

After DOT crews finish a 15-mile project near Siler City next year, Highway 64 will be an uninterrupted four-lane highway all the way from Plymouth to Asheboro.
