Adults Lace Up Skates For Crash Course In Ice Skating

Posted Updated

HILLSBOROUGH — It's hot outside, but there is a cool summer camp going on in Hillsborough this week. However, this is one camp that is not for kids.

It's not just another summer camp at the Triangle Sportsplex in Hillsborough. The figure skaters at the facility are not out of school for the summer. They are adults -- enjoying something they have always wanted to do.

Pam Watkins started taking skating lessons two and a half years ago at the age of 41. She says the hardest part was making the first phone call.

"I think that's the stumbling block for most adults is thinking they can't do it. We're living proof that there's a group of us willing to try," she says.

Instructor Susan Elvin says you are never too old to learn how to skate. This week, she is working with 20 adult skaters of all abilities on everything from precision moves to spins and jumps.

"I enjoy teaching the adults because they're out here because they really want to be, not because somebody else wants them to be," she says.

This is the first year the Triangle Sportsplex has held an all-adult skating camp. Organizers say there is so much enthusiasm this year, they will be putting it on the schedule again for next summer.
