Angier Stepmother Charged in Death Of 4-Year-Old

ANGIER — The stepmother of a 4-year-old Angier boy who drowned in a backyard pool last week was charged with involuntary manslaughter Thursday.
Police arrested Sandra Odom after questioning her for hours Thursday, and after hearing a 911 tape that raised questions about what happened when Jarrett Odom drowned.
Without saying a word, Odom walked out of the Angier Police Department in handcuffs.
"We did (issue) a warrant for Sandra Anne Harcastle Odom for the death of Jarrett Michael Odom," said Det. Anthony Poppler of the Angier Police Department.
The arrest came exactly a week after Odom called to report an emergency involving her stepson. Jarrett died later that same day.
On the 911 tapes, it is not clear if the twins were actually in the pool when something went wrong.
: What's wrong ma'am?
My stepson. He's not breathing. He came out of the pool. He went...he's taking a nap....now he's not breathing.
How do you know he's not breathing?
He's blue. I had him in here because I knew he didn't feel well when he got out of...
Out of the pool?
Yes, thank you. I knew he didn't feel well. I cleaned him up and he was fine. Now, he's not breathing...not breathing.
Four-year-old Garrett Odom is currently staying with his biological mother, Janet. Janet Odom had filed custody papers, suggesting the possibility that her children may be neglected by her ex-husband, Claude, and her new wife, Sandra, because they already had five other children under age 10 in their care.
The court papers were filed four hours before Jarrett drowned.
Odom's first court appearance is Monday morning. Police say there may be more charges filed.
