VANCE COUNTY, N.C. — An assistant Southern Vance High School football coach has resigned after being accused of directing racial slurs toward team members.
Tony Oakes' resignation comes a week after two ministers, as well as students and parents, accused Oakes of a pattern of verbal abuse in which he repeatedly used racial slurs.
Sources close to Oakes deny he is racist.
Rev. John Miles of Henderson, as well as another pastor, had threatened to file a lawsuit if Oakes, as well as two other coaches, were not removed from their positions.
Vance County's school superintendent has not commented on the allegation, but has said the claims were being investigated.
