Police Charge Boat Driver in Lake Fatality

Posted Updated

LEXINGTON — Davidson County authorities have charged a man with involuntary manslaughter in a boating accident that killed a 16-year-old girl last month.

Police arrested Al Bell of King on Tuesday, one day after a grand jury returned an indictment for involuntary manslaughter in the death of Tabitha Williams of Salisbury.

Bell turned himself in, authorities said.

Williams drowned June 20 after the boat she was riding in with her 14-year-old sister, Tiffany, and a family friend, John Long, collided with a bass boat driven by Bell, authorities said. Investigators estimated Bell's boat was traveling about 35 miles per hour when it collided with the other boat.

Williams' body was recovered more than three hours later in about 11 feet of water. Tiffany Williams was admitted to an intensive care unit at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Long, was treated for a broken elbow and other injuries.
