Pastors: High School Coach Made Inappropriate Comments To Players

Posted Updated

VANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A Vance County pastor wants a local football coach to resign after he allegedly made inappropriate comments to some athletes.

Rev. John Miles, of Henderson, as well as another pastor, claims that Southern Vance High School Assistant Coach Tony Oakes made the comments.

"We've got all the facts," Miles said. "Oakes was calling kids coons and monkeys. So, this is not about a race issue, you are talking about a football team, young males. I'm glad some folks called it a racial issue, but it's not. We got white males who came forward and said they had been cussed out."

The pastors have threatened to file a lawsuit if Oakes, as well as two other coaches, are not removed from their positions.

Vance County's school superintendent did not want to comment on the allegation, but said the claims were being investigated.
