Suspect Dies After Arrest Near Traffic Checkpoint

Posted Updated

LUMBERTON, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is trying to figure out how a traffic stop turned deadly.

Troopers say Jeremy Campbell put something in his mouth when he pulled up to a license checkpoint near Interstate 95. He jumped out of the car, but was captured near the checkpoint.

Afterward, Campbell told troopers he felt sick. They took off the cuffs and gave him CPR, but he later died.

The SBI is waiting on autopsy results. They said they are not sure if he choked or died from a drug overdose.
