The accident occurred at the Sunset Avenue interchange in Rocky Mount.
Crews from the North Carolina Department of Transportation worked with the utility company to complete repairs and reopen the highway.
Officials originally thought the highway would not reopen until 10 p.m. Thursday, but it reopened shortly after 4:30 p.m.
Traffic had been detoured off U.S. 301 in both directions, up the exit ramps to Sunset Avenue and back onto U.S. 301.
