DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham County Health Department is warning parents who sent their children to a Durham day-care center of a possible health threat.
Children who attended the home day care formerly known as Ann T. Roberts Day Care Home at 5024 Stephens Lane in Durham may have been exposed to a rare communicable disease called raccoon roundworm.
The alert applies only to children who attended the day care since September 2003.
The disease, which is spread when people accidentally ingest the worms' eggs, can be fatal, but it is very rare. There have only been 25 cases in the United States.
The health department asks any concerned parents to contact the department at
(919) 560-7635
or
(919) 560-7102
.
