Wake Deputy Says He's Lucky To Be Alive After Accident

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A suspect in a drunken-driving accident that nearly killed one person and injured a Wake County deputy has been released from a Raleigh hospital and is now in jail.

Police said Samuel Morris rammed into Capt. Walter Martin's sport utility vehicle in Knightdale Friday night. The SUV then rolled over James Warren, of Raleigh, who had passed out by the side of the road, killing him.

Morris was taken to WakeMed, where he remained until Sunday. He is now in the Wake County Jail under a $40,000 bond. Martin told WRAL that he could have died Friday night and was thankful to be alive.

"The doctors and the nurses and my family said I'm very lucky to be here, and that God must have a purpose for me that I don't know," Martin said.

Morris, who made his first appearance in court Tuesday, is scheduled to make his next appearance on April 11.
