A Knightdale man was killed Friday night after he was run over by an alleged drunken driver, authorities said.

Samuel Morris, 35, of Wendell, is charged with felony death by motor vehicle and driving while impaired. Authorities said Morris had been drinking at a Knightdale bar Friday night when he got behind the wheel and drove 60 mph down N.C. Highway 64.

Investigators said he drove less than a mile before slamming into Capt. Walt Martin's Suburban. The Wake County deputy had stopped to help a man, later identified as James Warren, passed out in the ditch.

Authorities said Martin was standing in front of his vehicle when it rolled and sent him flying over the hood. The Suburban continued rolling, killing Warren.

Warren had been at the same Knightdale bar as Morris, authorities said, and had apparently had been walking to a nearby hotel when he passed out on the side of the road.

Martin, who suffered only minor injuries, was treated and released from WakeMed. Morris, who was also injured, was listed Sunday morning in fair condition at WakeMed.
