Firefighters from Durham and surrounding areas were at the scene of a brush fire near the Streets at Southpoint off Fayetteville Road, finally extinguishing it at about 7 p.m.
Authorities said that between 12-15 acres of land burned, but no buildings were endangered. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Firefighters also extinguished a fire near the Duke Manor Apartments on LaSalle Street in Durham, where leaves and brush were found burning on the side of one building, authorities said. There was minor external damage to the building, but no apartments were affected by the blaze.
In the past few weeks, firefighters have been fighting blazes in several counties as a result of the lack of rainfall and high winds, which have made conditions favorable for brush fires. State officials said 93 fires were reported across the state on Thursday. So far this month, the total is 1,260, and there are more than 2,200 for the year.
